EXPEDITION TAMBOPATA 5D / 4N

Our combined camping and lodge expeditions offer a longer period to really experience the wonders of the rainforest. The macaw collpa in Tambopata made famous by numerous documentaries and magazine articles is by far the most exciting place to visit along this stretch of river and due to its remote location has good wildlife viewing possibilities. We can also arrange tailor made expeditions if clients are interested in shorter or longer trips or are particularly interested in birdwatching or photography. For backpackers looking for a genuine rainforest experience but at a cheaper price we offer a lodge and camping trip to the River Piedras. It is cheaper as a peke-peke motor is used not an outboard motor thereby increasing the journey time but not effecting the quality of service.

Tambopata 5 Days/4 Nights $590 - $500

Day 1
After meeting you at the airport we travel to the port on the banks of the river Tambopata. There is an optional stop at the market to see local produce and medicinal products from the rainforest. The first days river trip will take us deep into the Tambopata Reserve Zone. We travel by motorised dugout canoe heading upstream for approximately 5 and a half hours (picnic lunch onboard) stopping en route if we see any interesting birds or animals. The first night is spent in a small lodge with beautiful views up and down the river. There is an optional trip to a nearby waterfall where you can swim and fish. In the evening we can go looking for caiman (small alligators) with spotlights along the banks of the river.

Day 2

After breakfast and a morning walk to look at the huge diversity of plants, birds and possibly animals that live in the rainforest we continue upriver passing into the Bajuaja-Sonnene National Park. The second night is spent camping near "El Chuncho" a small macaw and parrot collpa and after setting up camp, time permitting, we can go for an afternoon walk.

Day 3

We get up early to see the macaws and parrots feeding on the clay lick and to take a walk in the forest surrounding the collpa. After breakfast we pack up camp and continue another 3 hours upstream to our final destination the main clay lick. We camp on a small island with views of the clay lick and the foothills of the Andes in the distance. Optional afternoon walk/swimming.

Day 4

A pre dawn start to see the macaw spectacular. Up to 5 species of macaw and 6 or more species of parrot can be seen feeding on the lick or sitting in the nearby trees making an incredible noise. After a late breakfast we can go for a short or long walk depending on the groups energy levels! Early afternoon we head back to Puerto Maldonado arriving in time to for a night of samba dancing or a traditional local meal depending on your preferences.

Day 5

Flights generally leave Puerto Maldonado first thing in the morning. Activities on Day 6 will therefore depend on flight times but it is usually an early breakfast and then the short journey to the airport to begin your next Peruvian adventure.
