This trek is a spectacular hike that plunges down into the Apurimac canyon and then back up again to the ruins of Choquequirao, that includes outstanding views of the canyon and river Apurimac. Visit the archaeological site. The ruins of Choquequirao, perched on a ledge high above the Apurimac. Hard and difficult so is a very unique trail in the high Andes.
CHOQUEQUIRAO ROUND TRIP 4 DAYS / 3 NIGHT
ITINERARY
Day 1: Cusco – Cachora – Chiquisca
We will leave Cusco at 5:30 am and drive for 4 hours to the village Cachora and then 1 hour to Capuliyoc to meet our horsemen and the mules that will carry all the camping equipment during the expedition. The trek offers beautiful views of Padreyoc mountain, its deep canyon and the river Apurímac. Beyond this point, we will descend for about 3 hours towards Chiquisca, where we will spend the evening. Day 2: Chiquisca – Playa – Marampata – Choquequirao
This will be one of the more difficult days of hiking. Following breakfast, we will descend to playa Rosalina and venture back uphill to pass Santa Rosa onto Marampata. We will stop here for lunch and enjoy the beautiful view of the landscape around the ruins. Once our bellies are full, we will continue the trek for about 2 hours until we reach the ruins of Choquequirao. Our camping site is located 25 minutes from this settlement. (B,L,D)
Day 3: Choquequirao – San Ignacio – Carmen
We begin our day early morning (06.00), where we will visit the archaeological site of Choquequirao to see the sun rising upon its temples, palaces and agricultural terraces. As the sun lifts past the horizon, we will descend 2 ½ hours to the Apurímac canyon’s deepest section called San Ignacio to have lunch. Once we have enjoyed our meal, we will ascend to our camping site in the beautiful gardens of Carmen. (B,L,D)
Day 4: Carmen – Tambo Bamba – Huanipaca
Today we travel uphill 4 hours to the head of the trail situated close to the manor of Tambo Bamba for lunch. That afternoon, on our way back to Cusco to drop you off at your hotel, we will pass the villages of Pacobamba and Huanipaca. (B)
