HISTORY OF HUCHUY QOSQO:
The complex was once a royal estate of the eight Inca ruler, Viracocha. Unlike the rest, the Incan emperors did not impose tax on the income of the residents. They rather controlled the labour and land. This was the reason why Incan emperors acquired many royal estates.
This helped them to become more powerful and rich. The royal estate of Huchuy Qosqo also served as the fortress to keep away the enemy. The name in Quechua means Little Cusco.
Later the emperor Viracocha faced a revolt from the Chancha tribe. He took asylum in Huchuy Qosqo and let his son, Pachacutec control Cusco. Pachacutec however, came to an agreement with Chanchas and put down his father. He then became the emperor of Incas.
He then expanded Huchuy Qosqo between 1420 and 1530. When the Spanish took over Cusco, the infamous conquistador Gonzalo Pizarro looted the site and burnt the mummy of Viracocha.
